A country you can feel

Colombia does very little by halves. In two weeks you go from the Andean mountains to the Caribbean reef, and in between there is coffee, which here is a conversation rather than a drink.

Our usual route starts in Medellin, continues to Guatapé and settles for a few days in the Coffee Region — Filandia, Salento, Cocora — where we visit family farms that do not put on a show for tourists. Then the Caribbean: Providencia, still far from mass tourism, Tayrona and Cartagena.

We coordinate the domestic flights, which in Colombia are part of the trip, and adjust the pace so that no stage feels too short.

UKIYO tips.

Preparation

Essential packing

  • Layers: the Coffee Region is cool at night and the Caribbean is relentless by day.
  • Hiking boots for Cocora and Tayrona.
  • A light rain jacket: in the coffee area it rains almost every day.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent for the coast.
  • Cash for farms, small villages and Providencia.
Worth knowing

Important notes

  • Providencia is reached via San Andrés: two flights have to fit together, so we plan them with a margin.
  • Domestic flights are part of the route, not an extra.
  • Altitude in Bogotá and the Andean region: take the first days easy.
  • Travel insurance recommended with full medical coverage.
  • Check your passport validity and the entry requirements.
