A country made of many countries

Indonesia is not travelled through: it is linked together. Each island has its own language, cuisine and way of praying, and the hop between them is part of the trip.

Our usual route starts in Java — temples, waterfalls and the sunrises of Bromo and Ijen — heads down to Bali for the water and the rice fields, slows down in Lombok and ends sailing through Komodo.

We coordinate domestic flights, ferries and drivers so that travel days do not eat up the trip. You set the pace: it can be done in sixteen days or stretched to three weeks.

05 · Before you go

UKIYO tips.

Preparation

Essential packing

  • Light clothes and a proper warm layer: sunrises at Bromo and Ijen are cold.
  • Closed shoes with a grippy sole for the volcano climbs.
  • Biodegradable sunscreen if you are going to dive or snorkel.
  • A sarong for entering temples.
  • A dry bag for the boat journeys.
Worth knowing

Important notes

  • Transfers between islands take up half a day: we plan them so they do not pile up.
  • Respect in temples: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Ijen is climbed before dawn and with a mask because of the gases.
  • Travel insurance recommended with medical cover, and diving cover if needed.
  • Check your visa requirements and passport validity before you leave.
