Our pilot destination

South Africa is the first destination we have put together by travelling all of it before offering it. That is why the route is specific: we know which accommodation works and how long it really takes between stages.

The trip starts in Cape Town, heads down to Hermanus to see whales in season and flies east for the safari section: St. Lucia and the iSimangaliso wetland, a detour through Eswatini and, finally, Kruger from south to north.

You drive yourself, which in South Africa is the natural way to travel, and we sort out the stages, bookings and park opening times.

Preparation

Essential packing

Layers and warm clothes: dawn safaris in the southern winter are genuinely cold.
Neutral colours for the bush: no white or bright blue.
Binoculars: they completely change what you see on a safari.
A South African adapter (type M), which is not the European one.
Sunscreen and a cap: the sun is strong even when it is not hot.

Worth knowing

Important notes

You drive on the left and the stages are long: we plan so you arrive in daylight.
The parks close their gates at a fixed time; arriving late means a fine.
You do not get out of the car inside Kruger except in signposted areas.
Malaria area in the east: ask your doctor about prophylaxis.
Travel insurance recommended with full medical coverage.
