Trips to · Canary Islands

Lanzarotea refuge of lava and calm.

Volcanoes, vineyards in black sand and an almost empty neighbouring island. A short break that needs no long-haul flight and still feels far away.

Lava, wind and clean lines

Lanzarote is a theatrical island: the black of the volcano, the white of the houses and the impossible green of the vines sunk into the ash. César Manrique gave it order, and it shows.

You explore it by car and without hurrying from a single base, which saves packing and unpacking. In five days there is time for the volcanic north — Jameos, Cueva de los Verdes, Mirador del Río — Timanfaya, a wine tasting in La Geria and a full day on La Graciosa.

It is the break we suggest when there are only a few days but you want a real disconnection.

05 · Before you go

UKIYO tips.

Preparation

Essential packing

  • A windbreaker: at the northern viewpoints the wind really blows.
  • Closed shoes for walking on lava, which is sharp.
  • Sunscreen even when the day is cloudy.
  • Swimwear at hand: coves appear without warning.
  • A hire car: without one you only see half the island.
Worth knowing

Important notes

  • Timanfaya is visited at set times and gets busy: it is best to go first thing.
  • The ferry to La Graciosa leaves from Órzola and the day is planned around its timetable.
  • You cannot drive freely through the national park: the volcano route is guided.
  • Respect the landscape: stay on marked trails and do not take stones.
  • Distances are short, but the roads in the north call for patience.
