Close by, yet far away

Morocco fits into a week and still changes landscape three times: the medina, the mountains and the desert. That is why it works so well as a first long trip.

We work with local drivers and guides who speak Spanish, in a private vehicle. That changes the trip: you stop wherever you want, sleep in small riads and reach Erg Chebbi with time to watch the sunset from the dunes.

We have two routes ready — a short one from Marrakech and another heading down from Tangier — and either can be adapted in days, accommodation and pace.

05 · Before you go

UKIYO tips.

Preparation

Essential packing

  • Layers: by day the sun is strong and at night, in the desert, it gets properly cold.
  • Comfortable shoes for walking for hours through the medina.
  • A scarf for the wind and sand.
  • Cash in dirhams: cards are not always accepted in souks and small villages.
  • European adapter: the plug is the same as in Spain.
Worth knowing

Important notes

  • Journeys are long: crossing the Atlas to the desert takes a full day.
  • Ramadan changes opening hours and atmosphere: we will let you know if your dates coincide.
  • Haggling is part of dealing in the souk, with patience and good humour.
  • Photograph people only with their permission.
  • Travel insurance recommended with medical cover.
