The Tangier to Marrakech route, from north to south

Morocco is not seen in a day or in a single city: it is crossed. And crossing all of it, from the Rif to the Sahara, is what changes the memory.

The route from Tangier to Marrakech is best travelled from one end to the other. This trip enters through the north and heads down to the red city in eight days, without detours and without leaving out what really deserves a stop. It starts with the blue of Chefchaouen, in the Rif, continues to the imperial medina of Fez, heads into the Sahara to spend two nights by Erg Chebbi — one of them in a camp — and climbs back up through the Todra Gorge, the Dades Valley and the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou before finishing in Marrakech.

It is a small-group trip of 4 to 10 travellers, with a Spanish-speaking guide and an air-conditioned minibus for the whole journey. That means you can stop wherever you like, linger at a viewpoint or set off earlier without depending on anyone else.

There are long driving days — Morocco is big — and we have arranged them so that each one ends somewhere worth the early start: a medina, an oasis, a dune. You will sleep in characterful riads inside the medinas and spend one night in a camp at Erg Chebbi.

This trip is for you if…
  • You want to see Morocco from north to south without retracing your steps.
  • You like sharing the road with a small group rather than a full coach.
  • You want to sleep in the desert, not just see it from afar.
  • You value staying in riads inside the medina.

    What travellers say
Travelling to Morocco was like opening a door to another world, but the night in the desert was pure magic. Crossing the dunes by dromedary at sunset, watching the sky turn orange and hearing nothing but silence was a feeling I will never forget.

    Frequently asked questions.

    SergioHelenaVíctor
    Question not here?

Write to us and a person from the team will reply.

Is it a group or a private trip?
It is a small-group trip of 4 to 10 travellers with a Spanish-speaking guide. Departures are guaranteed from 4 travellers. If you would rather travel with just your group or on other dates, we can arrange it privately on request.
    Is there a single-room supplement?
Yes. The price is per person in a double room; if you are travelling alone, write to us and we will confirm the supplement for your departure.
Where does the route start and finish?
It starts in Tangier — we pick you up at the port or the airport — and finishes in Marrakech, with a transfer to the airport on the last day. It is designed for travellers arriving in Morocco from the north who want to head south without retracing their steps.
How many hours of driving are there each day?
It depends on the day. Some are short, like the Chefchaouen day, and others are long, like the day to the dunes (about 7 hours). Morocco is big and the route crosses the whole country; that is why the group travels in its own air-conditioned minibus, with planned stops along the way.
What are the nights in the desert like?
There are two nights in the Merzouga area: the first in a riad at the edge of the desert and the second in a camp, in a private air-conditioned tent among the dunes, with dinner, Berber music and dromedaries at sunset.
    Which meals are included?
Half board (breakfast and dinner) in the desert — the Merzouga riad and the camp — and in the Dades Valley. In Chefchaouen, Fez and Marrakech, breakfast only, so you can choose where to have dinner. Lunches are always extra.
    Does the price include flights?
No. The price is from €690 per person in a double room and includes the overland route, accommodation and everything listed. Flights and travel to Tangier are extra; if you like, we can help you find them.
    What documents do I need?
Spanish citizens and those of most EU countries can enter Morocco with a valid passport and no visa for short tourist stays. A minimum validity of six months is recommended. Always check the requirements for your nationality before travelling.
When is the best time to go?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best seasons: mild days and bearable nights in the desert. Summer is very hot in the south and winter makes nights in the Sahara and the Atlas very cold, although the days are still pleasant.
Do you visit any World Heritage sites?
Yes. The highlight is the mud-brick ksar of Aït Ben Haddou ( https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/444/ ), a World Heritage site and the setting for “Gladiator” and “Babel”. You also explore the medina of Fez on foot, another UNESCO gem.
    Are tips expected?
It is customary, not compulsory. A tip for the driver at the end of the trip and for the local guides is appreciated, but it is up to you; in restaurants, rounding up is enough. Carry some cash in dirhams for day-to-day expenses.
