Best time to visit Indonesia: choose dates by island

Java, Bali, Lombok and Komodo need different plans through the year. Use seasonal patterns as a guide, then check weather, sea and connections.

The best time to travel to Indonesia depends on the islands and activities. For Java, Bali and much of a route towards Lombok and Komodo, the usually drier months are a useful starting point; they do not guarantee calm seas or no rain. Check real conditions and services for your dates before booking flights between islands.

The short answer is: if you can choose, travel to Indonesia in May, June or September. They usually offer good weather, fewer crowds than July and August, and better conditions for combining Bali, Java, Komodo or Lombok.

The useful answer depends on your route. A cultural trip through Java and Bali is not the same as sailing around Komodo, a break in Lombok or a remote trip to Raja Ampat. On a tailor-made trip to Indonesia, we adapt the itinerary to the season, weather, budget and pace.

Indonesia’s official climate guide places the broadly drier season for Java and Bali between April and October, with regional variation. Climatete averages do not replace a forecast or sea conditions for your week. Our published 18-day route is still finalising some nights and services; the dates must be checked against its actual itinerary.

01 · When to goWhen is the best time to travel to Indonesia?

The best general time to travel to Indonesia is from May to September, during the dry season. In these months there is less rain, better visibility for sea activities and more stable conditions for volcanoes and outdoor routes.

April, October and November can work well in some areas, especially if you are looking for fewer people and fewer visitors in some areas. December, January and February, on the other hand, are usually rainier months in much of the country.

MonthRecommendation
JanuaryRainy in many areas, useful for quiet or cultural trips
FebruaryFrequent rain, less recommended for island routes
MarchTransition, changeable weather
AprilA good transition month in Bali and Java
MayHighly recommended
JuneExcellent for almost everything
JulyVery good weather, more demand
AugustVery good weather, high season
SeptemberOne of the best months of the year
OctoberCan work well, transition
NovemberMore changeable, the rain begins
DecemberRainy, with high demand at Christmas

02 · Dry seasonTravelling to Indonesia in the dry season

The dry season runs roughly from May to September. It is the most recommended time for a first trip to Indonesia, especially if you want to combine several islands.

Advantages of travelling in the dry season

  • Less rain.
  • Better weather for beaches.
  • Good conditions for volcanoes.
  • Better visibility for snorkelling and diving.
  • Easier sailing in Komodo.
  • More comfortable road journeys.

What to bear in mind

  • July and August are high season.
  • Some hotels raise their prices.
  • Areas of Bali can be very crowded.
  • It is best to book in advance.
  • Famous places need careful timing.

May, June and September are usually the most balanced months. If you are preparing a complete route, you can see how it fits into a guide to our actual 18-day Indonesia route.

03 · Rainy seasonTravelling to Indonesia in the rainy season

The rainy season usually runs from November to March, although it varies by island. It does not mean it rains all day, every day. The rain is often heavy and short, but it can affect transfers, walks, beaches and sailing.

When it can make sense

  • If you are looking for lower prices.
  • If you want fewer people.
  • If the trip focuses on culture, food or wellbeing.
  • If you accept flexibility.
  • If you do not depend on sailing or volcanoes.

What to bear in mind

  • There may be mud on trails and in rice terraces.
  • Some treks can become more difficult.
  • The sea may be worse for certain activities.
  • Domestic flights and boats may be subject to changes.
  • Humidity is higher.

For a tailor-made trip, the rainy season is not impossible. But it requires a more flexible route that is less ambitious in terms of transfers.

04 · Travelling to BaliBest time to travel to Bali

Bali can be visited all year round, but the best months are usually May, June, September and October. July and August have good weather, but more people and higher prices.

Bali month by month

  • April: transition, can be a good time.
  • May and June: very good weather, fewer crowds.
  • July and August: good weather, high season.
  • September: an excellent balance.
  • October: can still work well.
  • December to March: more rain, although still possible.

If your trip focuses only on Bali, you can be more flexible. If you are going to combine it with Java, Komodo or Lombok, it is best to be more careful with dates.

05 · Travelling to JavaBest time to travel to Java

Java works especially well in the dry season, from May to September. This is important if you want to visit Bromo, Ijen, Borobudur or Prambanan in better conditions.

The volcanoes can be affected by weather, safety and natural activity. It is always worth checking up-to-date conditions before travelling.

Best for Java

  • May.
  • June.
  • July.
  • August.
  • September.

If you are doing Java + Bali, May, June and September are usually very good months.

06 · Travelling to KomodoBest time to travel to Komodo

Komodo usually works best between April and October, especially for sailing, dry landscapes, snorkelling and island-hopping routes. The dry season offers more stable conditions.

Best for Komodo

  • May.
  • June.
  • July.
  • August.
  • September.
  • October.

July and August may see more demand. If you want a quieter experience, May, June or September are good options.

Komodo can make the trip considerably more expensive depending on the boat and season. You can see this in our guide on current trip formats and price basis.

07 · Lombok and the GilisBest time for Lombok and the Gilis

Lombok and the Gilis usually work well during the dry season, from May to September. They are good options if you are looking for beach, snorkelling, some mountains or a more relaxed route after Bali.

Best for Lombok and the Gilis

  • May.
  • June.
  • July.
  • August.
  • September.

If you want to avoid more people, May, June and September are usually more pleasant.

08 · Raja AmpatBest time for Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat follows a different logic. For this area, many trips are planned between October and April, when conditions for sailing and diving are usually better in several areas. It is not wise to add Raja Ampat to a short route through Bali and Java without checking dates and logistics very carefully.

Raja Ampat deserves a trip of its own, or at least many more days.

09 · Type of tripBest time by type of trip

For beaches

May to September. Especially June and September if you want good weather and fewer people than in August.

For volcanoes

May to September, avoiding months of heavy rain.

For snorkelling and diving

It depends on the area, but Komodo, Bali, Lombok and the Gilis usually work well in the dry season. Raja Ampat has a different season.

For culture and temples

You can travel all year round, although May, June and September offer a better balance.

For saving money

April, May, October and November can have more attractive prices, as long as you accept a little more weather variability.

10 · What we avoidWhat to avoid if you want a smooth trip

If you want a comfortable route, it is best to avoid:

  • Including many islands in the rainy season.
  • Relying on boats in months of unstable weather.
  • Connecting domestic flights too tightly.
  • Travelling in August without booking key accommodation.
  • Planning volcanoes without margin.
  • Choosing fashionable areas of Bali without thinking about travel times.

Before finalising your route, it is worth being clear about what to see in Indonesia and which islands really fit your trip.

11 · With UkiyoDesigning Indonesia around the season

Indonesia changes a great deal from month to month. A perfect route for June may not be the best for January. That is why it is not wise to copy itineraries without adapting them.

We can start with the prepared Java, Bali, Lombok and Komodo route and check dates, connections and services. If you want different islands, they need a new sequence; moving an activity to another month is not enough.

A tailor-made trip to Indonesia lets the season work for the trip, not against it.
