Looking for 15 days in Costa Rica? The 15-day trip UKIYO has published also crosses into Panama for Bocas del Toro. It runs through Puerto Viejo, Bocas, Tortuguero, Bajos del Toro, Monteverde and Drake Bay before heading back towards San José. If you want to stay entirely in Costa Rica, the stages need a different design.

The sequence draws on an earlier journey, but the 14-night split is still provisional. Connections, accommodation and services must be confirmed for specific dates. This guide explains the order and the transfers that use up the most time; it is not a fixed booking itinerary.

01 · The routeCaribbean coast, forests and Pacific, with Panama

Puerto Viejo 2 nights → Bocas del Toro 3 → Puerto Viejo 1 → Tortuguero 2 → Bajos del Toro 1 → Monteverde 2 → Drake Bay 3. These 14 nights are an operational reconstruction, not a final allocation for sale. San José is the entry and departure point, with no overnight stay assigned in this base outline.

Days 1–2 · Puerto Viejo

The southern Caribbean coast is the first base after arriving in Costa Rica. Your flight time and the journey from San José determine how much of the first day is available. These two nights also leave time to prepare the Panama crossing.

Days 3–5 · Bocas del Toro, Panama

The Panama stage has three provisional nights. The hire car stays parked in Puerto Viejo: the route to Bocas uses shared transport and a boat, rather than driving the car across the border. The operator, timetable, border crossing, baggage and accommodation must be confirmed before this can be offered.

Day 6 · Back to Puerto Viejo

The route returns to the same base to collect the car. This night is not another full beach day: the time available depends on the transport from Bocas and the border crossing.

Days 7–8 · Tortuguero

From Puerto Viejo the journey continues towards La Pavona, followed by a boat. Costa Rica’s conservation authority explains access to Tortuguero; the car does not reach the village or lodge by road. Canal outings and park entry are specified in a proposal, not included merely because they are mentioned here.

Day 9 · Bajos del Toro

After leaving Tortuguero by boat, the route returns to the road for a night in Bajos del Toro. Time on site depends on the boat departure, car collection and actual drive.

Days 10–11 · Monteverde

Two provisional nights provide a block for the cloud forest. The right reserve or activity depends on your pace and available tickets; guided walks and other services are not assumed to be included.

Days 12–14 · Drake Bay and Corcovado

The final base is on the Osa Peninsula. The operational outline returns towards San José before connecting to Drake Bay, but transport, baggage and schedules need checking. Costa Rica’s conservation authority requires advance booking for Corcovado; sector, guide, entry and exit are chosen for the actual dates. Day 15 would involve returning towards San José for departure, subject to workable flight connections.

02 · ConnectionsWhere the 15-day plan succeeds or fails

Three sections cannot be treated as one continuous drive: Puerto Viejo ↔ Bocas, with a border crossing and parked car; La Pavona ↔ Tortuguero, by boat; and Monteverde ↔ Drake Bay, which requires a decision on how to travel there and back. Without margin, those transfers can consume the time you wanted in each place.

03 · Your choiceWhat if you want Costa Rica only?

Removing Bocas del Toro from the map is not enough: its nights must be reassigned, the car plan reviewed and the route reordered. We can design a Costa Rica-only journey around your priorities, but we do not have a fixed 15-day Costa Rica-only version to present as this same trip.

If the mix of Caribbean coast, Bocas, cloud forest and Osa appeals to you, see the Costa Rica and Panama trip in preparation and tell us your dates. We can explain which connections and services have been verified and prepare a specific proposal. The combined trip’s price cannot be transferred to a different itinerary; this guide gives no figure for an unpriced alternative.
