The best time to travel to Morocco depends on whether you prioritise medinas, the Atlas, the coast or the desert. Spring and autumn may make it easier to combine regions, but daytime heat and cold nights differ sharply between places. Choose dates against your actual stages and accommodation, not just a month on a list.
The short answer is: if you can choose, travel to Morocco in April, May, September or October. The useful answer depends on the route. A break in Marrakech is not the same as a private trip through the Atlas, Dades, Merzouga, Fez and the desert.
If you are looking for more than a standard trip, choosing the right date avoids excessive heat, very cold nights or uncomfortable stages. On a tailor-made trip to Morocco, we adapt route, accommodation and pace to the season, budget and number of travellers.
The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes different climatic influences along the coast, in the mountains and inland. A medina and desert route therefore needs a different date decision from an Atlantic break. Our editorial 10-day guide helps compare stages; it is not a confirmed UKIYO 10-day departure, hotel selection or price.
01 · When to goWhen is the best time to travel to Morocco?
There are real differences month by month: April is not the same as July, and the north of the country is not the same as the south. Here is the breakdown:
| Month | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| January | Good for cities, cold in the Atlas and desert |
| February | Usually fewer visitors; cold nights inland and in the mountains |
| March | A very good month for a complete route |
| April | One of the best months of the year |
| May | Excellent, the heat starts to rise |
| June | Possible, but hotter |
| July | Very hot inland and in the desert |
| August | Best avoided for routes to the south |
| September | A very good month |
| October | One of the best months |
| November | Good, cooler nights |
| December | Interesting for breaks, cold at night |
02 · GuideTravelling to Morocco in spring
Spring is one of the best times to travel to Morocco. March, April and May offer a good balance of weather, light and experience.
Advantages of travelling in spring
- Pleasant temperatures.
- A good time for Marrakech and Fez.
- Ideal for the Atlas and the valleys.
- The desert is more comfortable than in summer.
- More vibrant landscapes in some areas.
What to bear in mind
- Easter can push prices up.
- May can start to get hot in the south.
- It is best to book in advance on key dates.
Spring works very well for a editorial 10-day Morocco guide combining medinas, the Atlas, kasbahs and the desert.
03 · AutumnTravelling to Morocco in autumn
September, October and November are excellent months for Morocco. The intense summer heat drops, the medinas are easier to explore and the desert becomes pleasant again.
Advantages of travelling in autumn
- Milder temperatures.
- A very good time for the desert.
- Good light for landscapes.
- Less heat in Marrakech and Fez.
- Ideal for private routes.
What to bear in mind
- September can still be warm.
- November has cooler nights.
- Some special places to stay fill up in October.
If your priority is a private route with a driver, autumn is usually a very safe bet.
04 · SummerTravelling to Morocco in summer
July and August are not the most recommended months for a complete route through Morocco, especially if you want the desert, Marrakech, Fez or inland areas. The heat can be very intense.
When it can make sense
- If you are doing a short break.
- If you prioritise the Atlantic coast, such as Essaouira or Agadir.
- If you travel with very comfortable accommodation and adapted schedules.
- If you cannot travel at another time.
What to avoid in summer
- Long routes to the desert.
- Midday visits in Marrakech.
- Overloaded stages.
- Sleeping in places without good air conditioning.
- Travelling without margin for rest.
If you only have July or August, a more coastal or less demanding route can be designed, but we would not copy a spring itinerary.
05 · WinterTravelling to Morocco in winter
Winter can be interesting for breaks to Marrakech, Fez or Essaouira, but you need to bear in mind the night-time cold in the Atlas and the desert.
Advantages
- Fewer people.
- Good prices outside Christmas.
- Beautiful light.
- Cities are more comfortable during the day.
- A good option for short breaks.
What to bear in mind
- Cold nights in the desert.
- Possible snow in the Atlas.
- Fewer hours of daylight.
- Accommodation needs to be chosen carefully.
- Christmas and New Year can push prices up.
A winter break in Marrakech can work very well. For a long route to the desert, it is worth preparing clothing and accommodation carefully.
06 · When to goBest time for Marrakech
Marrakech can be visited all year round, but it is more pleasant in spring and autumn.
Best for Marrakech
- March.
- April.
- May.
- September.
- October.
- November.
In summer, visits should be done early or at the end of the day. In winter, nights can be cool, but the city is still very interesting.
Dates also affect availability and budget, but there is no useful Marrakech price range without the exact nights, room, travellers and services. Compare the basis of published trips and ask for a proposal for your dates.
07 · The Moroccan desertBest time for the Moroccan desert
The desert is best enjoyed in spring and autumn. April, May, September and October are usually ideal months. March and November can also work, although nights can be cooler.
Best for Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
- March.
- April.
- May.
- September.
- October.
- November.
July and August can be extremely hot. January and February can have cold nights. If the desert is a central part of the trip, the date matters a lot.
08 · FezBest time for Fez
Fez works well in spring and autumn. In summer it can be hot, although less extreme than in the desert. In winter it can be cool.
Best for Fez
- March to May.
- September to November.
- Winter if you want fewer people and accept cooler temperatures.
Fez deserves a local guide and time. The season helps, but context matters just as much.
09 · The AtlasBest time for the Atlas
The Atlas changes a lot with altitude. Spring and autumn are usually ideal for crossing it and doing gentle walks. In winter there may be snow in high areas and in summer some areas can be hot during the day.
Best for the Atlas
- April.
- May.
- September.
- October.
- November.
If the route crosses mountain passes, it is worth checking conditions before travelling in winter.
10 · Essaouira and the Atlantic coastBest time for Essaouira and the Atlantic coast
Essaouira has a milder climate and a lot of wind. It can work well even in hot months, precisely because the Atlantic cools it down.
Best for Essaouira
- April to October.
- Summer if you are looking for the coast and milder temperatures.
- Spring and autumn to combine with Marrakech.
Essaouira is a great option if you want to bring the intensity down after the medinas or if you are travelling at hot times of year.
11 · Type of tripBest time by type of trip
For a complete route
March, April, May, September, October and November.
For a break in Marrakech
All year round, best in spring and autumn. Winter also works well.
For the desert
March to May and September to November.
For the coast
April to October, especially Essaouira if you are looking for a cooler climate.
For saving money
January, February, June and November can be interesting, avoiding Christmas, Easter and bank holidays.
12 · What we avoidWhat to avoid if you want a comfortable trip
It is best to avoid:
- The desert in August.
- Long routes without air conditioning in summer.
- Crossing the Atlas in winter without checking conditions.
- Marrakech at midday in July.
- Basic camps on cold nights if you are looking for comfort.
- Designing the route without margin to rest.
Before deciding, also look at what to see in Morocco to choose a realistic route for your dates.

13 · With UkiyoDesigning Morocco around the season
Morocco can be visited all year round, but not every route works for every month. An ideal route in April may not be comfortable in August, and a winter break is not experienced the same way as a desert trip in October.
Compare your dates with the route and format of our currently published trips. Changing regions or accommodation calls for a new proposal; the price is confirmed for the real occupancy, services and season.
A tailor-made trip to Morocco lets the season work in favour of the trip, not against it.
