Ideas from our own experience

Things to do in South Africa without filling every day

City, coast, wetlands and safari offer very different trips within the same route. These are the days that make most sense on our first route through South Africa and Eswatini.

Five ways to experience the route

Choose what you want to prioritise

You do not have to do everything. We organise each stage around one main experience and leave room for the weather, for rest and for discoveries along the way.

Cape Town and the peninsula

See the city from above and explore the coast

Table Mountain impressed us with its views; it is worth saving it for a clear day. The peninsula, Boulders Beach and the coastal scenery can take up another unhurried day.

For those who enjoy combining the city, easy walks and scenic drives.

Hermanus and the Overberg

Give time to the coast and the wine

On our trip we combined wineries with our arrival in Hermanus and were able to see whales. Sightings depend on the season and on nature; the coast is still worthwhile even without them.

One night lets you change pace, as long as the day does not turn into a list of stops.

St. Lucia and iSimangaliso

From the wetlands to the estuary

We explored iSimangaliso with a guide and sailed the estuary at sunset on a small boat. We also shared a Zulu cooking workshop. Three nights leave room to choose these experiences without cramming them into a single day.

Operator, times and activities are confirmed for each proposal; these are experiences we had, not automatic inclusions.

Eswatini · Hlane

A pause between two regions

The night in Hlane gave us a sunset drive and a stay inside the camp. It is a different stage from St. Lucia and Kruger, but the border crossing and arrival time affect what you can fit in.

It is best treated as a stop with time of its own, not as a quick visit on the way through.

Marloth Park and Kruger

Spend the safari observing, not chasing a checklist

Over four nights we suggest starting with two at South Safari Lodge and continuing towards Lower Sabie and Satara. We know the landscapes of the south and the corridor towards Satara first-hand; each area offers a different way of exploring the park. The wildlife encounters we had were memorable, but no sighting can be promised.

The specific overnight stay in Satara and the departure flight from this area are still subject to availability and operational checks.

A deliberate choice

What we left for another trip

We also travelled part of the Garden Route and the Panorama Route after leaving Kruger. On our first 13-day itinerary we chose not to add them: the transfers would take up too much time compared with the experiences we want to offer.

If you are interested in a different route, we can research it with you as a UKIYO custom design.
