Our experience in Lombok: Kuta, surf and Tetebatu

During four days in Lombok, we explored Kuta’s southern beaches and the rice fields around Tetebatu. We surfed at Mawun Beach, joined a local cooking class and walked to waterfalls with people who know the area. This is our experience in Lombok, rather than a fixed itinerary to copy day by day.

Close to Bali, Lombok gave us a different pace: time to talk, observe and stay longer when a place felt right.

One evening we shared music and rice wine around a small fire with people from a village. That unplanned moment stayed with us as much as the beaches and waterfalls.

It was not an itinerary full of “tourist checkpoints”. It was something much better: a small slice of local life.

01 · South coastDay 1 · Kuta Lombok and the southern beaches

We arrived in Kuta Lombok with that feeling you get when a place has not yet lost its essence. Quiet streets, surfers walking barefoot, small local restaurants and a relaxed energy that invites you to slow down.

After dropping our backpacks at the hotel, we rented a scooter to explore the south.

Getting around like this is part of the experience. It does not just give you freedom; it lets you find small hidden beaches that do not appear on many maps.

The south coast of Lombok is full of them.

Wide beaches, white sand and green hills dropping straight into the sea. Some almost empty. Others with a small warung where you can have a drink looking out at the ocean.

We ended the day at Bukit Merese, one of those places that seem designed for saying goodbye to the day.

The sun setting over the Indian Ocean, the wind moving the grass on the hills and a few travellers and locals sitting in silence watching the horizon. No music, no noise, just the sound of the sea.

In Lombok you do not go looking for sunsets. They find you.

02 · KutaDay 2 · Surf, local cooking and a night in Kuta

The second day started early, with one of the most typical activities in southern Lombok: surfing.

We went to Mawun Beach for a short surf lesson. The waves felt manageable that day, and learning there turned out to be much more fun than we expected.

After a few wipeouts and some well-caught waves, we went back to Kuta for something completely different: a local cooking class.

Cooking Indonesian food is a way of understanding part of its culture. We learned to prepare several traditional dishes using fresh ingredients from the local market, hand-ground spices and very simple techniques full of flavour.

When the time came to taste what we had cooked, we understood something important: in Indonesia, food is not just food; it is a moment to come together.

The night ended with a walk around a few small bars in Kuta. No big nightclubs or mass tourism. Quiet music, long conversations and that feeling that time moves a little more slowly.

03 · TetebatuDay 3 · Tetebatu and rural Lombok

If Kuta represents Lombok’s coastal side, Tetebatu shows its greenest face.

The landscape changes completely: endless rice fields, humid jungle and the majestic Rinjani volcano dominating the horizon.

Here we walked with local people who led us along small paths between rice fields, plantations and waterfalls hidden in the jungle. It was not a standard organised excursion. It was more like a shared walk with people who know every corner of the place.

We walked to several waterfalls where the water fell between rocks covered in vegetation. Then we carried on to a small local restaurant where we had one of the best meals of the trip.

The place was called Warung Monkey Forest.

A simple, unpretentious spot, but with spectacular cooking. Home-made food, local ingredients and that family atmosphere that makes you want to stay longer than planned.

04 · A night in TetebatuThe night Lombok gave us something unexpected

That night something happened that was not in any plan.

After dinner, we stayed chatting with some people from the village. Someone brought out a guitar, someone brought rice wine and we ended up sitting around a small fire.

Between songs, laughter and improvised conversations, we understood something you will not find in any travel guide:

The best thing about a place is not always in the itinerary.

Sometimes it appears when you simply stay a little longer than planned.

05 · Our impressionsLombok: an island that still keeps its own pace

After four days in Lombok, we were left with a very clear feeling: this island still keeps something that is starting to disappear in other parts of Indonesia.

Calm.

It is not a destination for rushing or collecting places. It is somewhere to move slowly, talk to people, discover small beaches and let the trip take shape.

That is why Lombok has become a very special stop on our routes through Indonesia.

Because some destinations are visited… and others are lived.

06 · What we learnedWhen a place fits a way of travelling

Our experience in Lombok was exactly the kind of trip we look for when we design our routes: authentic places, real encounters and moments that do not appear in classic itineraries.

Because in the end, travelling well is not about seeing more places, but about experiencing them differently.

If you are combining Lombok with other islands, see our 15-day Indonesia route for ways to choose between Java, Bali, Komodo and a slower Bali–Lombok option.
