Marrakech and the desert: how to plan the route

If you want to leave Marrakech, cross the Atlas, see the Erg Chebbi dunes and return to the city, use a five-day, four-night route as a starting point. Travel takes up a substantial part of the journey. Choose the desert landscape you want and the time you hope to spend there before adding stops.

An outing to Agafay near Marrakech is a different trip: a rocky, arid landscape with less time on the road, without reaching the dunes near Merzouga. The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes the two areas separately.

01 · ChooseMerzouga, Chigaga or Agafay?

Erg Chebbi, near Merzouga

Choose Erg Chebbi if Saharan dunes are central to your trip. From Marrakech, the road crosses the Atlas and takes several stages; a night in the desert should not be treated as a quick side trip. Check exactly where you will sleep and how much time you will have there after arrival.

Erg Chigaga

Chigaga calls for a different route. Before choosing it, ask for the full itinerary, how the final stretch works and who provides the transport. Do not assume that timings or inclusions from a Merzouga proposal also apply here.

Agafay

Agafay can add an arid landscape experience without the longer journey to the Erg Chebbi dunes. It may fit a short stay, provided you know that it is a different landscape and route.

02 · TimeHow many days for Marrakech and the desert?

Our published Marrakech to Erg Chebbi route spans five days and four nights. It illustrates the sequence Marrakech → Atlas → southern valleys → Merzouga → return. The exact nights, stops and services must be confirmed for the departure you are considering.

With fewer days, compare the time on the road with the hours you would actually spend among the dunes. If you also want to visit Fez or spend longer in Marrakech, do not simply add another stop to the same schedule: allow more days or redesign the route.

03 · RouteStops that earn their place on the journey

Aït Ben Haddou, the southern valleys or the Todra Gorge may fit on the way to Merzouga. Decide which places you intend to visit and which are only transfer stops. Mentioning a place on an itinerary does not mean its admission, guide or activity is included.

For a wider route, see our ten-day Morocco itinerary. It helps you decide whether to focus on the south or include other cities.

04 · Before bookingCheck the proposal, not only the map

  • Days and nights in each place, plus expected driving time each day.
  • Exact camp location, room type and meals.
  • Actual format: group departure, private trip or shared services; dates and minimum numbers where relevant.
  • Transport, guide, admission, activities, supplements and flights included or excluded.

Our current Morocco trips include dated group options and the possibility of asking about a private trip. Availability and terms are confirmed before booking. If you want destinations or accommodation outside a prepared route, we treat that as a trip designed from scratch.

05 · QuestionsFrequently asked questions

Can you go from Marrakech to Merzouga in just a few days?

Yes, short itineraries exist, but the outward and return journeys take many hours. Consider how much time remains for walking, resting and visiting places along the way before choosing by the advertised duration alone.

Is Agafay the same as Erg Chebbi?

No. Agafay is near Marrakech and has a rocky, arid landscape; Erg Chebbi is the dune area near Merzouga. The experiences and travel times are different.
