A riad is a traditional Moroccan house arranged around an inner courtyard. Many have been converted into small guesthouses. Staying in one can put you close to the life of a medina, but the experience depends on the building, your room and its location. Here is what to check before you choose.
The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes the riad as a traditional house. That definition explains the architecture; it does not tell you whether a particular property will be quiet, accessible or right for your route.
01 · DefinitionWhat makes a riad different from a hotel?
The courtyard is the centre of the house, with rooms opening towards it rather than the street. This can create a sheltered atmosphere and a close connection to the building’s history. Modern riads vary widely in size, service and comfort, so the word on the sign is only a starting point.
02 · ExperienceWhat can a stay in a riad feel like?
In a well-chosen riad, stepping in from a busy street to an inner courtyard can feel like a pause. Breakfast, conversation with the hosts and the use of shared spaces may be part of the stay. None of those details is guaranteed by the label “riad”: check the room and the services actually offered.

03 · LocationWhere is it within the medina?
A central address can make it easier to explore on foot, but think about arrival as well as sightseeing. Ask how close a vehicle can get, how you will find the door with luggage and what the street is like after dark. The best location depends on your route and the way you prefer to move.
04 · RoomCheck the room, not just the courtyard
Photos often highlight a patio or rooftop. Compare the room you will actually book: its size, windows, bathroom, air conditioning or heating when relevant, and whether stairs are unavoidable. If you sleep lightly, ask where the room sits in relation to the courtyard and shared spaces.
- Confirm the exact room type and the number of nights.
- Check breakfast and any other meals included in the rate.
- Ask about stairs, access and the last part of the arrival route.
- Read recent reviews for the room and service, not only the building’s photographs.
05 · ChoiceWhen might a hotel suit you better?
A riad is not automatically the best choice for every traveller. Easier vehicle access, a lift, a larger room or specific facilities may matter more on some trips. A hotel can be the right decision when it solves those needs; a riad can be right when its particular location and atmosphere fit the journey.
06 · With UKIYOHow we choose accommodation for a route
We compare the location, the room and the services against the itinerary and your priorities. We will make clear what has been checked directly and what still needs confirmation with a local partner. The proposal should make clear which property and room are being considered for your dates; a beautiful photograph is not a booking confirmation.
